Kitchen Remodel

This is the story of my surprise kitchen remodel for my wife.

We have this old house with 10 ft ceilings and ugly kitchen cabinets with no real storage.

We decided to replace the cabinets doors and reface the frames with knotty pine veneer.

I ordered the veneer online and started making the doors and drawers fronts with white cedar.

The veneer came in and I stuck the box in storage to open when it was time to use it.

6 months later I opened the box to get it ready for use. I found that before the veneer was packed someone had kicked a hole right thru the center of all 3 pieces. Of course i couldn't get a refund because of the time I had it.

I told my wife that I could cut it into strips and use it that a way. But she still wasn't happy about it.

Mean while her brother called wanting her to come down for a Vacation in CA. We decide that she would go just before Dec 25th and stay for 11 days. That way I could stay here and get the kitchen down before she and my son got back and they would be out of my way.

One weekend we were in Amarillo Tx at the local Lowes. I said that I thought it would be a good idea to stop at the kitchen remodel display just to look around.

I mentioned that when the time came to replace the counter top, which one would she like. She pointed out 3.

Then we came across a back splash display. These was really neat and I saw her eyes light up looking at them. These were made of plastic that looked like the old tin ceilings from the old days. So I said "Dear if we were to ever do something like this which one do you like?" She showed me.

That week I went to our local Hardware store and showed them the formica samples that she picked out. They could get me countertops with one of the samples. So I ordered them.

Then I made an excuse to go back to Amarillo for saddle supplies. After picking them up I went to Lowes and picked up the back splashes that she liked. Then I found a place that sold knotty pine paneling and picked some up. Got home and hid everything.

She left for CA late Fri night and would be back in 11 days.

Now remember, she thinks that I'm only going to veneer the cabinets facing and replace the doors.

Instead I'm replacing the facing, countertops, backsplash, and building new cabinets on the North wall.

When she got back at 1am on a Wen. morning I meet her outside and made her close her eyes before going in.

When she opened them she said "What the heck?"
