Company History
We are a family run business. The shop started in the forties under Wilford Lewis and it was called Wilford Lewis Saddle Shop. Wilford is a third generation leather worker and a saddlemaker with over 50 years of experience in his craft. He has worked with such masters as E.T. Amonett in Roswell, NM and Windy Ryon of Fort Worth, Texas. Later he changed the name to Wilford Lewis & Sons Saddle Shop when his sons started to work with him. Later one of his sons died and the other went on to start his own saddletree company called, Lewis Saddletree Co. So Wilford went into semi-retirement and turned the shop over to his daughter Ellen and her husband Dallas. I have been working side by side with Wilford learning all I could about making a saddle. I have been making saddles now for 15 years using the same style and techniques that Wilford taught me.
We have changed the name to Lewis Saddle Shop in keeping with her family name. Ellen works with me, she does all the tooling on the saddles. She has been tooling ever since she could sit at a stamping rock and hold a hammer. Wilford started teaching her how to tool at around age 13. She tools with the same style as her father. We both make a great team and a great looking saddle.
